In an unprecedented effort, 16 defenders from 15 countries participated over the three weeks of the 41st Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva from 24 June to 12 July – a historic landmark in trans and gender-diverse participation at UN level advocacy.
Geneva, July 12, 2019 – In a defining vote, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert focusing on the protection against violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Congregation for Catholic Education released a document titled “Male and Female He Created Them” that contains deeply problematic language on gender issues, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and children’s rights. Sign our Petition against this blatant reproduction of ignorance, fear and hate.
The ICD-11 is to be voted in at the 72nd World Health Assembly. After moving trans-related categories out of the Chapter on Mental Health, the next steps in the process include getting rid of the remaining pathologizing language and advancing towards legal depathologization and universal health coverage.
Organisations from across the world have signed a joint statement and Call to Action to join with us in working together to fully dismantle pathologization. Trans identities are formally de-psycho-pathologized in the ICD-11.
More than 50 intersex-led organisations and groups from every region of the world have signed a joint statement to the World Health Organization condemning the repathologisation of intersex variations as “disorders of sex development” in the WHO International Classification of Diseases 11 (ICD-11), and medical classifications that promote early surgical intervention to “fix” intersex bodies.
