We Are Unstoppable! GATE Statement on the International Day of Action for Trans* Depathologization

This year’s International Day of Action for Trans Depathologization comes with an unstoppable energy!

Just yesterday Jonas Gunnarsson, the General Rapporteur on the rights of LGBT people at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, declared that, “Outdated classifications of diseases at national and international levels should be removed. Transgender people’s access to medical care should be simple and stigma-free” (1) Gunnarsson’s statement reflects a growing consensus that transgender people should not be pathologized for their gender identity.

Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly: Pathologization is disrespectful of the human dignity of transgender persons.

“We must stop treating transgender people as if they are diseased,” said the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s General Rapporteur on the rights of LGBT people Jonas Gunnarsson (Sweden, SOC), on the eve of the International Day of Action for Trans Depathologization.

At High Risk for HIV, Transgender Individuals Are Organizing and Advocating for Social and Legal Change

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 –A new report released today by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, and Global Action for Trans* Equality (GATE), highlights the ongoing struggle of transgender individuals across the globe in their fight for access to appropriate and effective HIV care and treatment. For years data has shown that transgender individuals are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS, both in terms of increased risk of infection and the high number of them already living with the virus.
Today, however, transgender individuals are increasingly using the power of community organization and mobilization to demand not only an equal place in society, but timely access to relevant medical and other support services.
