The Congregation for Catholic Education released a document titled “Male and Female He Created Them” that contains deeply problematic language on gender issues, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and children’s rights. The ICD-11 is to be voted in at the 72nd World Health Assembly. After moving trans-related categories out of the Chapter on Mental Health, the next steps in the process include getting rid of the remaining pathologizing language and advancing towards legal depathologization and universal health coverage.

More than 50 intersex-led organisations and groups from every region of the world have signed a joint statement to the World Health Organization condemning the repathologisation of intersex variations as “disorders of sex development” in the WHO International Classification of Diseases 11 (ICD-11), and medical classifications that promote early surgical intervention to “fix” intersex bodies.
