Intersex Awareness Day, observed annually on October 26th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about sex variations and intersex issues, shedding light on the human rights abuses and violations experienced by intersex individuals. It aims to enhance societal understanding while amplifying the voices and experiences of intersex people.

Historically, intersex experiences have been marginalized, cloaked in silence by the prevailing endosex regime, which operates as a censoring force. This silence perpetuates challenges for intersex individuals to fully participate in public spaces and be recognized as legitimate members of society on a global scale. The lack of empowerment for intersex people underscores the importance of visibility as a key issue for intersex groups and individuals.

On October 26th, Intersex Awareness Day provides an opportunity to elevate this critical issue, allowing it to be recognized as a collective concern deserving of public attention. It serves as a call to action to spread awareness, advocate for change, and cultivate allies within communities. In 2022, we are revitalizing our efforts by emphasizing the intersection of art and activism in raising awareness for intersex issues. The initiative, titled INTERSTATES-OF-THE-ART, showcases a collection of art pieces curated by intersex artivists. These works, along with the artists’ biographies and personal statements, will form a gallery launched on Intersex Awareness Day 2022.

The creation of these art pieces serves as a means to encapsulate the complexities of intersex politics and arts, offering unique perspectives and agendas from intersex artists. It provides a platform to highlight the personal statements of artivists, contributing to a broader understanding of intersex experiences and advocating for societal change.
