Abhina Aher
Global Action for Trans* Equality wishes to warmly welcome and announce the newest member of staff, Abhina Aher, who recently joined GATE to lead the organization’s HIV/AIDS programs and advocacy.
Abhina is a transgender woman and Hijra residing in New Delhi, India who has been engaged in transgender and HIV advocacy for two decades. Most recently she worked as National Program Manager at India HIV/AIDS Alliance on their sexual minority programs. In addition, Abhina has served as Chair of Asia Pacific Transgender Network since 2012. She is also an executive member of the International Reference Group on Transgender Women and HIV (IRGT), an interim steering committee member of the International Trans Fund, and a former community taskforce committee member of the United Nation’s 2016 High Level Meeting on Ending AIDS.
Abhina will be taking over development and management of GATE’s advocacy to end the devastating effect that stigma, lack of access to healthcare, and the impact of the HIV epidemic has on trans communities. As part of this week, she will be conducting consultations to develop GATE’s agenda on trans issues and HIV, and lead strategies to end the historical exclusion of trans activists from international processes on HIV.
Please join us in welcoming Abhina to GATE!
