20 June, Statement delivered by COC Nederland and TGEU at the 59th Human Rights Council session

Adi Petrov, a trans activist from Bulgaria, delivered a statement on behalf of COC Nederland and TGEU, welcoming the IE SOGI report and highlighting how regressive policies have been accelerating displacement for trans people.

From so-called “LGBT propaganda” laws and pride bans, to legal gender recognition bans and criminalization of LGBT expression, and trans people’s rights to non-discrimination, all are severly impacting trans people.

Adi stressed that displaced trans people often face profound challenges with belonging in the country of destination, including mental health crises, being excluded from legal recognition
processes and access to trans-specific healthcare. At the end of the statement, Adi asked the IE SOGI:

How do you plan to follow up on the implementation of your recommendations and involve IOM, UNHCR, and other UN actors?
