During the 53rd Regular Session of the Human Rights Council Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences, one of the Trans Advocacy Week delegates delivered a statement on behalf of 14 trans and gender diverse activists from the Global South and East in response to the report on Custody, violence against women and violence against children. This statement was delivered on 23 June 2023.

The statement, delivered by Barbra Wangare, welcomed the report’s focus on how pseudo-scientific concepts are used to justify violence against women and children, thus maintaining systemic gender inequality. The statement highlighted the failure of this report to address numerous legal and socio-economic challenges experienced by trans and gender diverse parents and their children. Drawing attention to the crucial role that intersectionality within the Special Procedures system plays when addressing different lived experiences, the statement asked how the SR VAW will ensure that trans mothers and their experiences will have equal possibilities to engage with the Mandate’s continued work on supporting women and children undergoing discriminatory custody cases.
