Abhina Aher

Abhina Aher, transgender activist from India working for the last 25 years on the issues of human rights and health for vulnerable communities living with or affected by HIV.

She has won several awards for her exceptional advocacy of transgender rights. She established the first advocacy dance group led by transgender people in India called Dancing Queens and the collective community-based organization of trans men and women for transgender welfare called Transgender Welfare Equity and Empowerment Trust (TWEET) Foundation. She was part of the technical support teams of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National AIDS Control Society (NACO). She holds a postgraduate diploma in NGO management and a diploma in software programming and is a prominent leader of the Hijra (socio-ethnic) community in India.
