The World AIDS Conference 2018 is being held in Amsterdam from 23-28 July, with pre-conferences on 21-22 July.
GATE is participating in several pre-conferences and numerous sessions during the main conference, as well as co-hosting the Trans Networking Zone with IRGT – A Network of Trans Women and HIV.

Monday 23 July

  • The members of IRGT and staff open up the week at the Global Village with the theme Work it! Bridging the Trans Divide and participate to have activities to provide a safe space where we all can exchange strategies and share knowledge on a global response to HIV.

11:00am – We’re not half a Community Action Walk – Alexandra Rodriguez, IRGT

  • The Trans youth will lead this activity where we will have an activity creating signs and placards protesting several issues with AIDS 2018, including the lack of enough trans spaces and scholarships for trans and non-binary individuals. We will march throughout the Global Village.

2:00pm – From GIPA to MIPA to Empowerment of Trans Women living with HIV in the US – IRGT Members

  • Founded in 2015, Positively Trans is engaging trans people living with HIV to create a community-driven advocacy agenda. Members of the project will share their personal experiences and discuss the importance of empowering trans people living with HIV in combating anti-trans stigma and improve access to trans-centered health care.

4:00pm – The State of Trans and Intersex Organizing 2017 Reports – Mauro Cabral, GATE – [Bilingual: Español & English]

  • Understanding the Needs and Priorities of a Growing but Under-Resourced Movement: AJWS, Astraea and GATE surveyed groups across the globe on trans and intersex issues. The results provide a unique snapshot of the funding and organizational needs and experiences of those at the front line.

Tuesday 24 July

  • This Roundtable will bring activists together to discuss policy contexts and the implementation of PrEP access and uptake, testing and links to HIV care for trans MSM. Raise the visibility of HIV vulnerable and positive trans men within the ‘MSM and Transgender People” HIV response.

  • PrEP and trans people. What are the issues in different countries for trans people? What PrEP studies, trials and research are happening – are they led by trans people? What more do we need to know about PrEP? By us, for us? Or with them, for us?

  • Many trans-led organizations lack the resources, capacity, and infrastructure to be self-sustaining and therefore struggle to meet the specific HIV care and prevention needs of their own population. In
  • response to this problem, the IRGT conceived the idea of identifying, training, and nurturing a cohort of trans individuals who could then work with trans-led organizations within their respective regions to address these issues. In this session we reflect on the lessons learned in implementing this project.

  • Increasingly we have seen litigation victories in the Southern African region that has advanced the fundamental rights and dignity of transgender persons. This discussion will explore some of the litigation and advocacy strategies which activists have used to advance rights of transgender persons.

11:30am – Legal Gender Recognition: How far is South Africa willing to go? – Ricky Nathanson, TREAT; Liberty Glenton Matthyse, Gender DynamiX

  • Despite South Africa providing legal protections to transgender persons these do not translate into practice. Aligned to the rights to self-identification and self-determination, this presentation highlights these inconsistencies whilst reflecting on judicial interventions for positive change.

  • Prevention of HIV has seen significant advances in the past years, yet they fail to be tailored for the trans population. Frequently the prevention methods are tailored for one population and then applied on all. Panelists will talk about specific prevention intervention on the trans community.

  • We will open our Trans Networking Zone to the issues of global trans migrations. A space where trans, gender diverse and non-binary identified migrants can share their experiences and have a discussion on recent incidents with trans migrants across the world.
