Consequences of trans visibility
Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), internationally celebrated on 31 March, was created to celebrate trans identities and affirm our existence. Trans visibility is about recognizing and celebrating trans and gender diverse lives.
However, as our communities step forward to claim space and equality, we are often met with hostility, scapegoated as threats to public decency and stripped of our fundamental human rights. Fear-driven misinformation narratives have dominated mainstream discourse for the past several years. What remains unseen is that, as a result, our communities are denied access to healthcare, employment, housing, sports, public spaces, legal recognition, and even travel.
GATE is committed to securing funding and resources that support advocacy efforts to break down these barriers. Our communities are diverse, and unique and bring value to all areas of life. The THRIVE Consortium is a global coalition led by GATE that is living proof that our communities can withstand hatred when we stand together.
THRIVE Consortium: a trans-led future
The THRIVE Consortium is a global coalition of trans-led organizations working together to advance the health, rights, and well-being of trans and gender diverse people. Coordinated by GATE, THRIVE strengthens connections among regional trans-led networks worldwide to build a more cohesive international trans movement.
The work of THRIVE aims to counter anti-rights agendas, ensure that trans people enjoy a high quality of life, and enhance trans and gender diverse communities’ access to human rights. There is much at stake for our communities, with transphobia actively inciting harm and normalizing transphobia in every region of the world.
What is at stake for trans visibility?
Trans and gender diverse people are facing an unprecedented wave of dehumanization:
- Escalating violence: Hate crimes against trans and gender diverse people, particularly trans women of color, are rising as hostile rhetoric fuels real-world harm.
- Legal rollbacks: Hard-won rights through decades of activism are being stripped away, from bans on gender-affirming care to policies erasing trans identities from official documents.
- Loss of funding: Trans-led organizations providing life-saving services are struggling to survive as key donors withdraw support under pressure from anti-rights movements.

Visibility alone is not enough. We must take action! The solution to rising transphobia is not silence but amplification of trans voices, true allies, and real stories that portray trans and gender diverse people as who we truly are – your neighbors, coworkers, family members, and friends.
How can you engage?
- Think of something so simple, that might be considered universal, that unifies us all, trans and cis people.
- e.g. I have experienced bullying, #JustLikeYou
- e.g I have been in love, #JustLikeYou
