The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the UN’s main platform for reviewing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which took place from 14 July to 23 July 2025, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council.
This year theme of the HLPF focused on “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind”.
GATE was represented by Best Chitsanupong, our Human Rights Officer, who attended the sessions and delivered statements to highlight some of the issues, challenges and needs of our trans and gender diverse communities.
During HLPF 2025, the following SDGs were reviewed in-depth:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
- SDG 5: Gender Equality
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- SDG 14: Life Below Water
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
GATE highlighted the intersection of trans rights and gender equality within these SDGs, demonstrating how the exclusion of trans communities undermines gender equality, access to good health, and decent work.
What we did at HLPF for trans communities?
- GATE collaborated with the LGBTI Stakeholder Group to publish our Linking Sustainable Development Goals to Trans Work documents, including the SDGs & Trans Engagement, the Technical Briefs on SGD 1 and SDG 3 briefs, and the Report on Poverty, on the Stakeholder Group’s website, ensuring data on the trans agenda is centered for SDGs.
- GATE worked to integrate gender diversity language into the SDG 5 statement at the SDG 5 + interlinkages (Gender Equality) session on Tuesday, July 15
- GATE spoke at the HLPF side event “Delivering the 2030 Agenda: Aligning Global Processes Through Inclusive Multilateralism”. The session organized by Major Group & Other Stakeholders (MGoS) centered the role of civil society and other stakeholders in defending human rights, countering the growing backlash against inclusive development, and driving practical action—especially around SDG 5 (Gender Equality) SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), on Thursday, July 17
GATE partnered with the LGBTI Stakeholder Group, including OutRight Action International, COC Nederland, RFSL and others.
