Evidence for Justice research is a study produced by Fem Alliance Uganda (FEMA) that documents the lived realities of Trans and Gender Diverse persons in Uganda and provides a deeper understanding of how anti-rights movements are impacting safety, well-being, access to services, and daily survival. This publication is a key act of resistance and strength that demonstrates just how much can be achieved through direct funding to communities in criminalized contexts

The research presents powerful personal stories, community-level insights, and critical evidence that highlights the urgent need for protection, inclusive policy responses, and sustained advocacy for trans and gender diverse rights.

The ongoing and intensifying anti-rights movement poses profound challenges, not only to individuals whose identities fall outside binary norms but also to the broader project of human rights. Violence, discrimination, and marginalization have become alarmingly systematic, affecting the lived realities of trans and gender diverse Ugandans in ways that threaten their safety, dignity, and fundamental freedoms.

The report provides recommendations aimed at activists, policy makers, international partners, and civil society, designed to inform and guide effective responses in the evolving terrain of rights, resistance, and risk. You can find recommendations to:

  • Strengthen Documentation and Research
  • Reform Policies and Laws
  • Empower and protect trans communities
  • Ensure trans health and well-being are protected
  • Ensure a stronger international solidarity and support
  • Improve monitoring and evaluation tools that better include and serve trans communities
  • Address Anti-Rights Movements

You’ll also be able to find recommendations to the Ugandan Media on reporting discrimination and human rights violations of trans and gender diverse persons.
