19 June, Statement delivered by RFSL at the 59th Human Rights Council session

Purity Tukwasibwe, a trans woman from Uganda currently living in Sweden, delivered a statement on behalf of Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights (RFSL) and welcomed the Special Rapporteur’s on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association timely report and its intersectional analysis of the obstacles LGBTI and other vulnerable groups face in exercising peaceful assembly during elections.

The statement also showed deep concerns on dangerous precedents that are being set by Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act and similar legislative trends in Nigeria, Ghana, and Bolivia.

At the end, Purity posed a question to the Special Rapporteur:

How can your mandate help states recognize the harm of anti-trans rhetoric and uphold peaceful assembly rights during elections?
